Silu - Introduction

Silu

Introduction

This ballard which may date back to the beginning of the last century, describes a pilgrimage to Gosainkunda or Gosainthan (Newari: Silu or Silutirtha). Although, according to a superstitious belief, this pilgrimage is to be made without the company of one's wife, the woman figure in this poem insists on accompanying her husband to Silu.

The ballad has probably been written by a Jyapu. Its poetic quality is not very great and as in most works of this genuinely popular type. The story is given in the form of a dialogue.
